How Supplied:

Each 5 ml syrup contains 200 mg Guaifenesin, 30 mg Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, 10 mg Phenylephrine Hydrochloride. 60 ml syrup in a bottle.

Category

Expectorant, Antitussive, Decongestant

Mechanism of Action

Guaifenesin is thought to act as an expectorant by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi.

Dextromethorphan acts on cough center in medulla; decreases sensitivity of cough receptors and interrupts cough impulse transmission.

Phenylephrine, which is a nasal decongestant. It unblocks a stuffy nose and helps the patient to breathe more easily by reducing the swelling in the nasal passages.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption

Guaifenesin is rapidly absorbed after oral administration.

Dextromethorphan is well absorbed from the gut following oral administration.

Phenylephrine hydrochloride is irregularly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and also it undergoes rapid distribution into peripheral tissues.

Distribution

No information is available on the distribution of guaifenesin and phenylephrine in humans.

Due to extensive pre-systemic metabolism by the liver, detailed analysis of the distribution of orally administered dextromethorphan is not possible.

Renal, as inactive metabolites.
