How Supplied

Pursina cold® tablets are presented as forms containing 500mg Acetaminophen and 30 mg pseudoephedrine HCl. There are 10 tablets in blister pack, 3 blisters with a leaflet in a box.

Decongestant- Analgesic

Mechanism of action

Pseudoephedrine acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the mucosa of the respiratory tract, producing vasoconstriction. The medication shrinks swollen nasal mucous membranes, reduces tissue hyperemia, edema and nasal congestion and increases nasal airway patency.

Acetaminophen has analgesic action has not been fully determined, it may act predominantly by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system and to a lesser extent,throught a peripheral action by blocking pain impulse generation.

Pharmacokinetics

Acetaminophen:

  • Absorption: oral-rapid and almost complete.
  • Half-life:1 to 4 hr
  • Elimination: renal-3% of dose may be excreted; hemoperfusion-200 ml per minute; Hemodialysis 120 ml per minute.

Pseudoephedrine Hcl:

  • Duration of action:3-4 hr
  • Elimination: renal- about 55 to 75 % of a dose is excreted unchanged.

Pregnancy and Breast- Feeding

FDA pregnancy category C.

Caution should be considered when it is administered to a nursing woman, because it is distributed into breast milk.

Precautions

  • Checking with physician if symptoms persist or become worse, or if high fever is present.
  • Avoiding alcoholic beverages; alcohol consumption may increase risk of acetaminophen-induced liver toxicity.
  • Possible insomnia; taking the medication a few hours before bedtime.
  • Caution if taking appetite suppressants.
  • Caution if other medications containing acetaminophen, aspirin or other salicylates are used.
  • Suspected overdose: Getting emergency help at once.
  • Need to inform physician or dentist of use of medication if any kind of surgery is required.

Drug interaction

Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine: high blood pressure or depression, CNS depressant .

Dosage and administration

Usual adult dose:

1 to 2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 8 tablets in a day (24 hours).

Usual pediatric dose:

Not recommended.

Side Effects

Allergic reactions, anemia, cardiac effects, CNS stimulation, psychotic episodes, severe dizziness, severe nervousness or restlessness; blood dyscrasias, hepatitis, hepatotoxicity.

Storage

Store below 30 ˚C (preferably 15˚C to 30˚C), protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
